Abridge
Ambient AI documentation deployed across major health systems
Our take
Abridge builds ambient AI that listens to patient visits and turns them into clinical documentation, billing codes, and orders inside Epic. Founded in 2018 by cardiologist Shiv Rao in Pittsburgh, it targets large enterprise health systems and now supports more than 55 specialties and 28 languages, with pre-visit summaries and decision support added around the core scribing product. Its contextual reasoning engine ties every generated line back to the underlying conversation, which matters to compliance teams as documentation flows into revenue cycle.
Abridge is the runaway funding leader in ambient documentation. It raised a $250M Series D in February 2025 at $2.75B, then a $300M Series E led by Andreessen Horowitz just four months later at $5.3B, bringing total funding past $750M. It counts Kaiser Permanente, Duke Health, Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, and UNC Health among 150+ health system customers, took the number one Best in KLAS spot for ambient AI in revenue cycle in 2025 and 2026, and in June 2026 announced partnerships with Nvidia and Eli Lilly as it pushes from scribing into a full clinician intelligence platform.
What it does
- Ambient capture of visits into draft clinical notes
- Supports 55+ specialties and 28+ languages
- Generates billing codes and orders from the encounter
- Pre-visit patient summaries pulled from the EHR
- Contextual reasoning links note text to billing evidence
- Prior authorization workflows via Availity partnership
Where it's strong
- The category's enterprise leader, live at 150+ health systems including the largest and most complex Epic shops.
- Best in KLAS for ambient AI in revenue cycle two years running, with the deepest Epic integration in the market.
- A $750M+ war chest and partnerships with Nvidia and Eli Lilly mean it can outspend rivals on R&D.
What buyers should weigh
- Built and priced for large enterprise health systems; small groups are not the target buyer.
- The product surface is expanding fast beyond documentation, so evaluate what is shipping versus keynote roadmap.
- Heavily Epic-centric; organizations on other EHRs get less of the deep-integration story.
